Unit 179 encourages our local high school students to participate in ALA Girls State Program of California. We interview students throughout Marin, sponsoring delegates to attend a week-long session focused on leadership and citizenship in Sacramento. In the fall we host a dinner for the delegates and their families to honor their achievements and share the Girls State experience.
Our non-profit project focuses on sending care packages to active duty troops stationed around the world. We aim to provide support, encouragement, and a touch of home to these brave men and women serving far from their loved ones.
Our volunteers contribute time and support for the residents from the Veterans Home in Yountville and Fort Miley in San Francisco. Working with volunteer services, Unit 179 donates gift cards and fills requested needs for our veterans year round. We host a yearly luncheon recognizing and honoring our female veterans at the Log Cabin.
Red poppies are worn to show support for the armed forces community, those currently serving, veterans and their families. Wearing a red poppy honors the heroes who have fallen and the service members who are fighting for our freedom. Auxiliary volunteers distribute paper poppies in exchange for contributions to assist veterans programs.
Supporting Travis Air Force Base Fisher House year around and at the holidays with our “Operation Santa Claus” gift bags and cards. Fisher House provides no-cost housing for families of active-duty service men and women and veterans undergoing medical treatment at the David Grant Medical Center on base.
We are working with Homeward Bound in Novato, helping veterans transitioning into housing with “move-in boxes” of supplies.
